Sound Attenuation by Hearing Aid Earmold Tubing

In this study we model the sound attenuation properties of a hearing aid earmold tube. The model includes thermoviscous acoustic effects and it couples structural vibrations to the external acoustic field. Moreover, the finite element domain is coupled at two boundaries with an electroacoustic model of a hearing aid and an acoustic 2-cc coupler.

Earmold Considerations for Optimal Spatial Hearing in Children with Unilateral Hearing Loss

One of the primary functions of the auditory system is to facilitate spatial hearing. Normal binaural hearing allows listeners to exploit acoustic cues provided by interaural disparities in time and level to identify the location of important sound sources in three-dimensional acoustic space and to enhance speech perception in the presence of competing speech or noise. Psychophysical studies ha...

Waveguide model of the hearing aid earmold system

BACKGROUND The earmold system of the Behind-The-Ear hearing aid is an acoustic system that modifies the spectrum of the propagated sound waves. Improper selection of the earmold system may result in deterioration of sound quality and speech intelligibility. Computer modeling methods may be useful in the process of hearing aid fitting, allowing physician to examine various earmold system configu...

Hearing Aids for Musicians

When comparing music to speech, there are four essential physical differences that warrant consideration during a hearing aid (or cochlear implant) fitting. Understanding these differences and selecting appropriate hearing aid circuitry will help to optimize the enjoyment of music for the hard-of-hearing listener. This applies equally to those who are musicians as to those who like to listen to...

Development and preliminary evaluation of an earmold sound-to-tactile aid for the hearing-impaired.

A binaural earmold sound-to-tactile aid was constructed by inserting a vibrating element into a Lucite earmold. The earmold could be vibrated at either 80 Hz (when incoming acoustic signals were below 2000 Hz), at 300 Hz (when incoming acoustic signals were above 2000 Hz), or both (when incoming acoustic signals were broadband). Subjects were fitted with one of these bimodal vibrating earmolds ...
